Otter 1, Thetord Breckland, March 2013.
My first job was working for the conservation of wetlands, at a time when otter populations were - like birds of prey - at an all-time low and largely missing from England due to organochlorine poisoning (mainly dieldrin). Banning these chemicals and drainage authorities adopting a more enlightened approach to river engineering has helped their recovery. So seeing otter for only the second time in my life, and the first time in England, was a huge thrill. And especially being treated to such wonderful views!
